Roma star Nicolò Zaniolo had an eventful game against Napoli, as he was booked and will miss Inter, had penalty appeals rejected and then went off with a sprained ankle.

The incidents occurred in the second half of their Serie A trip to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Zaniolo tried to pull out of a high tackle on Mario Rui and then fell on the ball, leading to a handling offence.

He was shown the yellow card, but DAZN report it was not for the handball, but rather his protests at the foul being given against him.

Soon after, Zaniolo went down in the penalty area when Alex Meret came rushing off his line and the pair connected heavily.

However, replays show Meret got the ball first, although even that wasn’t enough to calm Jose Mourinho’s sarcastic smile and a member of his bench getting sent off for dissent.

Zaniolo then buckled all by himself near the touchline, seemingly spraining his ankle and immediately calling for a substitution.

He was able to walk off without help, which suggests it might be a sprain and not anything more serious.

5 thought on “Zaniolo has ban, penalty appeal and injury for Roma”
  1. The ref was a bully. He was waiting for Jose to sneeze so that he could give him a red card. Refs must not be emotional. Ref seems to be protecting other teams

  2. They did not even check the VAR for that challenge, which may well have been a penalty since the keeper takes out Zaniolo when he still could have gotten the ball. The writers of this article are clearly biased (Roma fans are used to it for decades, nothing new).

Also another foul/penalty when Meret punches Ibanez in the head, instead mystery foul gets called against Abraham somehow. Spectacular. Anyway Roma destroyed Napoli in the second half. Napoli look like a tired squad, not a team fighting for the scudetto. Roma look like a team who has found themselves.

  3. Tough match that ended well for Roma. I thought it would be a draw before the game. Both Zaniolo and Tammy go down too easily for my tastes. And yet Zaniolo does get mauled without consequence. It seems as if the refs are teaching him a lesson? He protests, he gets yellow carded almost every time and I think he has couple of reds this season for protest which is a bs reason for a sending off. Daje Roma!
