Inter Vice-President Javier Zanetti assures “Mauro Icardi is staying at Inter”, and will renew his contract when the transfer window shuts.

The striker has a €110m release clause in his contract, but it’s only valid for foreign clubs, and only in the first two weeks of July.

That clause can no longer be activated this summer, and the Nerazzurri’s VP says the Argentine will be staying at San Siro.

“Mauro is staying at Inter, he’s very happy with us,” Zanetti told Fox Sports Argentina.

“As soon as the transfer window shuts we’ll negotiate and renew his contract. He’s very happy with us.

“He’s been captain for two years and he behaves like one: he called Lautaro [Martinez], he welcomed all his teammates and he’s the first to explain Inter to new arrivals.

“He’s a great professional.”

Zanetti also discussed the signing of Martinez.

“We were convinced he’d go to Atletico Madrid, but when we discovered there was a chance we started working on it.

“We talked to his agents in Milan, then [sporting director Piero] Ausilio took a trip to Argentina to watch him, where he unfortunately scored a hat-trick!

“I saw unfortunately because at that point we were sure the price would rise, but the truth is that the player and Racing were constantly available.”
