Inter Vice-President Javier Zanetti assures Mauro Icardi “is very happy” and will sign a new contract “at the most opportune time”.

The Nerazzurri captain is one of the deadliest strikers in Europe, and there’s a €110m release clause in his contract which is valid for the first two weeks in July.

The club wants to raise or remove that clause in an extended deal, but so far there has been nothing concrete.

“Mauro is very happy at Inter and we’re very happy with him,” Zanetti told Tuttomercatoweb.

“The renewal will come at the most opportune time, we’re all waiting for it. He’s important for us on and off the pitch, he’s our captain and our reference point.”

Zanetti was also quizzed about Coach Luciano Spalletti, who has come under pressure in recent weeks.

“We don’t evaluate his work with by a defeat or a win, he’s a very good Coach, a great professional who puts all his passion on the pitch.

“We need to analyse as we go, we’re happy with him even if we’ll make our assessments at the end of the season.

“He needs to work calmly, we want to face every competition as protagonists.”
