Javier Zanetti has admitted that he thought Inter could mount a serious title challenge after the 3-1 win at Juventus earlier this season.

The Nerazzurri became the first team to beat the Old Lady at the Juventus Stadium, putting an end to their 49-game unbeaten League run in the process.

However, since then, Juventus have took a commanding grip of the standings, while Inter have won on just five more occasions in the championship.

“A lot of people thought we were good enough for the title after that game, myself included,” the captain noted to Tuttosport ahead of Saturday’s meeting.

“However, we’ve never been complete since and the season has gone the way it has. Now we are here fighting for Champions League qualification.”

There is great rivalry between the Italian giants and the Argentine knows what is at stake when the two sides face off.

“It is the game. It is history,” he added. “I understood what this match means when I arrived, for everything that has happened on and off the pitch.

“These are the encounters that every player wants to take part in.”

Zanetti also spoke of his respect for Juventus boss Antonio Conte and Montenegro international Mirko Vucinic.

“Conte was a warrior when he played, you saw that he gave everything until the very end in search of victory. He was an honest opponent and this Juventus side has his character.

“Vucinic? I’d take him out of their side seeing that, since his days at Roma, he’s always caused us problems. He can invent things with one touch.”
