Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini says Coach Walter Novellino ‘was confused’ against Chievo and that he ‘wants an explanation’.

The Rosanero were beaten 3-1 at the Bentegodi yesterday and remain on level points with Carpi in 17th place.

Novellino was appointed on March 10 to succeed Beppe Iachini, becoming the Sicilian club’s eighth coaching change of the season.

“We took many steps backwards compared to the performance against Empoli,” Zamparini told Giornale di Sicilia.

“On that occasion Palermo were compact and organised, they played as a team, but in Verona I just saw an enormous mess.

“I saw players without qualities and Novellino seemed to me to be confused.

“Maybe I also have some responsibility, I didn’t give him advice, I hope that things improve next week.

“Novellino has given confidence to many of those who he could work with continuously. But I don’t think Allegri renounces the internationals after the break.

“So he played Cionek, who was very excited, in the place of Gonzalez for example. And then I can’t explain the substitution of Hiljemark at the end of the first half, which was an obvious error.

“I haven’t heard from Walter yet, but I want this move explained.

“It’s true that he’s only got one point in three matches, but I have faith in him and I repeat that yesterday against Chievo he was just confused.”
