Maurizio Zamparini has explained why Palermo have loaned striker Mauricio Pinilla to Cagliari but has not closed the door on his possible summer return.

The Chilean forward completed his move to the Sardinian side on Wednesday, joining for an initial six-month loan spell at a cost of €300,000, with Cagliari given the option of making the deal permanent in the summer for a further €3.7m.

However, Rosanero patron Zamparini believes that the player may still have a future in Sicily, as he revealed why the club were prepared to let him go, in spite of their struggles this season for fit options in attack.

“Everything will depend on whether [Cagliari President Massimo] Cellino enforces the option on the deal.

“Pinilla is a good guy and a quality player, but right now he no longer had the determination to play in Palermo.

“He had character problems rather than technical ones and this opportunity was taken – in Sardinia he will have more space and we do not lose money.”
