Vincenzo Montella has mused on Fiorentina’s transfer plans, suggesting Giuseppe Rossi and Mario Gomez won’t be replaced with youth players.

La Viola yesterday evening assured passage to the Coppa Italia quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Chievo, after which their Coach was asked on the latest situation regarding trying to replace their injured stars in attack.

With Rossi facing a few months out and Gomez’s return still uncertain, the club have been paired with Papu Gomez and Antonio Di Natale as possible replacements.

“It was a difficult match, complicated and not for granted. We interpreted the game in the best way,” Montella mused of the Chievo victory, before commenting on the notable absences in attack.

“After the first diagnosis we are more relaxed, whilst of course we will miss him both technically and as a man. There are great young prospects here, but it is not fair to compare them with Rossi and Gomez, who are players that are already established. I do not think it is right to give them this pressure.

“Papu Gomez to come in as a replacement then? I don’t know, maybe I will get at least one ‘Gomez’ available!

“Mario Gomez will take at least a few more weeks, but I honestly do not know how much longer it will be before he is on the field. He has not yet trained in the field, even if he is longing to return.

“Di Natale? Lately I have not heard anything, even if he is a strong player, who I think will continue to play despite what he said the other day.

“In the history of La Viola, it is hard to find another time when there have been two injuries to players of this level, we have spent so much on them and it would be even more costly to replace them if necessary.

“What is certain is that it would need to be someone who would guarantee goals as well as different playing systems.

“I do not know if [the Della Valle brothers] will have to break the piggy bank. This club, though, has proven with facts and over time to be able to do good for Fiorentina.”
