Sampdoria Vice-President Edoardo Garrone has revealed why the club thanked boss Beppe Iachini for promotion with the sack.

Iachini was a mid-term appointment in Genoa and he successfully managed to get Doria back into the top flight via the Play-Offs.

He was then replaced by Ciro Ferrara at the start of this month after Doria also tried to tempt Rafael Benitez.

“We chose Iachini after sacking Gianluca Atzori because his CV convinced us of the fact that he could be the right man to get us up,” Garrone told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We then had to make a different and painful decision, but we needed a person who was more suitable for the path that we want to go down.”

The port club managed to get back into the top Division at the first attempt, but it was a tortuous road after a problematic start.

“Winning promotion was a lot more difficult than many people may think,” the official added.

“Now we are working towards creating a solid Sampdoria side and that’s why we have worked hard to improve the structure of the club.

“The damage of relegation, on a morale and economical level, was so great that we can’t go down again. It’s not a promise, but a necessity.

“Serie A will be very competitive from the bottom to mid-table – our aim is a tranquil salvation.”

The transfer rumour mill has suggested that Samp could be interested in re-signing Antonio Cassano from Milan.

Garrone concluded: “The Cassano story will be a nightmare for the rest of the summer and, in all probability, once that is over…”
