Massimo Morales reveals he was ‘going to be part of Ralf Rangnick’s staff at Milan’ and explains precisely why the German coach pulled the plug on the whole deal.

Rangnick had been seemingly on the verge of signing the contract in late July when suddenly he released a statement, swiftly followed by one from Milan, confirming they had abandoned talks.

Instead, current coach Stefano Pioli was given an extension to June 2022, but it was never clear precisely what happened for such a massive U-turn.

“I was going to be part of Rangnick’s staff at Milan,” revealed Morales to Radio Sportiva.

The Italian tactician has worked for years in Germany, including the Bayern Munich youth academy and as an assistant to Giovanni Trapattoni, so would’ve been an ideal bridge to this new Serie A experience for Rangnick.

“I’d known for some time that it wasn’t going to happen and it was his choice. He wanted to just be a coach with the Rossoneri, not the technical director, which was suggested.

“It’s true Rangnick wanted carte blanche when choosing players and making decisions, as he has immense experience and you have to put your trust in him because, without wanting to be too bold, his history shows that he deserves it.”

It was reported during the days before the total breakdown that Pioli was doing so well, Milan had urged Rangnick to initially become their director of sport, with a view to later progressing to the role of coach.
