Charles De Ketelaere saw what would’ve been his maiden Serie A and Milan goal disallowed using an on-field VAR review because Olivier Giroud was offside and interfering with Sampdoria defenders.

The Belgian had the ball in the net at Marassi when Emil Audero missed Rafael Leao’s cross and it bounced in off his shoulder.

Some thought the goal was disallowed for handball, but it struck him high up on the shoulder and would not have been penalised for a handling offence.

Instead, the very long wait for VAR was because Giroud was offside in the build-up and his presence prompted defender Alex Ferrari into making the poor clearance which fell at Leao’s feet.

The referee had to make the call using the VAR on-field review, because VAR can only rule on objective incidents.

Offside is objective, but whether a player is interfering with play or not, that is a subjective decision that only the referee can make.

  1. While I think it was a soft call by the ref (ultimately), great summary of the incident Susy. I think a lot of people misinterpreted what happened.
