Il Sole 24 Ore are trying to identify the American investor in talks to buy Milan, narrowing it down to four possible names.

Yonghong Li failed to provide the €32m to increase the capital by the deadline, so it will be paid by hedge fund Elliott Management.

He has 10 days to repay that figure, or Elliott will effectively begin to call in his assets and start taking over the club.

Meanwhile, negotiations continue to sell the Serie A giants with reports of an American figure very strongly interested in a takeover.

Financial newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore tried to identify the name and narrowed it down to four options, other than Tom Ricketts.

They start with Rocco Commisso, a businessman who was born in Italy and moved to America at the age of 12.

He is the founder and CEO of cable television company Mediacom and since last year has been the owner of the New York Cosmos football club.

Another is Tilman Joseph Fertitta, born and raised in Texas after his family emigrated from Sicily. He is the owner of Landry’s Inc restaurants and since 2017 the NBA team Houston Rockets.

Third on the list is Joshua Harris, who has stakes in several sporting ventures, including the New Jersey Devils hockey team, basketball side the Philadelphia 76ers and has an 18 per cent cut of Premier League club Crystal Palace.

Finally, James Dolan could be the mystery buyer, as he and his family already own shares in Madison Square Garden, not to mention the New York Knicks (basketball), New York Rangers (ice hockey) and New York Liberty (women’s basketball).
