Ciro Immobile faces his hometown club Napoli this evening, but it’s reported he could’ve joined them in 2016 until his current Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri boycotted the transfer.

The game kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 19.50 GMT.

Immobile was born in Torre Annunziata, on the outskirts of Naples, in February 1990, but never played for the Partenopei.

He spent time in the Salernitana and Sorrento youth academies before moving north for Juventus in 2007.

His record against Napoli is of seven goals in 17 meetings, including six in the last seven Serie A encounters.

According to Il Messaggero newspaper, Immobile had been on the verge of that dream move in 2016, when he left Sevilla for a return to Serie A, but at the time coach Sarri didn’t want the centre-forward in his squad.

Instead, the striker joined Lazio for €9.5m and has gone on to become their all-time top scorer with 174 goals in 249 competitive appearances for the club.

By his own admission, Sarri’s style of football is not really suited to Immobile, but when faced with a star man who is so important to his squad, the coach had to adjust his tactics to fit the characteristics of his best player.
