Mario Rui got himself sent off for kicking Empoli striker Francesco Caputo in the crotch and the Napoli wing-back will sit out a lengthy Serie A ban.
The Portugal international had collided with Caputo at the Stadio Castellani and was on the ground when he looked up and lashed out a kick between the forward’s legs.
It was caught on camera and VAR directed the referee towards the screen for an on-field review, resulting in an inevitable straight red card.
As it is for violent conduct and a reaction foul, Mario Rui can expect at least a two-match Serie A ban.
That means he’ll be suspended for the next rounds against Lazio and Atalanta.
