There is chaos at Serie B club Ternana, as coach Aurelio Andreazzoli resigned, advised the club to bring back his predecessor and President Stefano Bandecchi confirmed he spat at fans.

The situation degenerated after today’s 2-1 home defeat to Cittadella, which left them mid-table on 34 points, still well clear of the relegation zone.

Andreazzoli had only been appointed on December 2, 2022 and had 12 games in charge, overseeing three wins, three draws and six defeats.

The coach tended his resignation after the final whistle and did so with a rather unusual message.

“Andreazzoli is a football man and in his view it is not right to carry on with an average of one point per game,” said President Bandecchi in a press conference.

“Teams need shaking up and he told me that this is one of those situations. I wouldn’t have resigned if I was in his place. He also told me that Cristiano Lucarelli performed miracles with this team and advised me to bring back Lucarelli. I have to think about it.”

Lucarelli was in charge from August 2020 to November 26, 2022 and this season had put together six wins, four draws and four defeats in Serie B before he was fired.

The tension is sky high at Ternana, as after the final whistle the ultras called President Bandecchi over to the stands and they had a very unfriendly exchange.

“It is true, I spat at the fans. But they spat at me first. I might be a Christian, but I cannot turn the other cheek. I put the money in for this club and get spat at for it, so the fans are the ones who need to change their attitude.”
