Yunus Musah admits the competition for places at Milan forces him to ‘really improve and test myself’ to even get the opportunity to play.

The 20-year-old is currently on international duty with the USMNT, where despite his tender age, he already has 27 senior caps.

He moved to Milan over the summer from Valencia at a cost of €20m and was suspended for the opening Serie A round, but made his debut for 24 minutes in the 4-1 victory over Torino.

“It’s been great. There’s so many great players in that team, the competition is high, so this is an opportunity for me to really improve and test myself,” he told CBS Sports.

“If I’m training against these guys every week, trying to take their spot, it’s about grind, giving my maximum and keep improving. I’m just going to keep training hard and when the opportunity comes, I’m going to try to seize it.”

Milan have some huge games coming up after the break for international duty, because they face rivals Inter in the Serie A top of the table Derby della Madonnina, then open the Champions League group phase against Newcastle United at San Siro.

Musah has four different passports, so he could’ve represented the United States, England, Ghana or even Italy, having spent eight years of his childhood in the Peninsula.

That time also means he speaks Italian fluently and has been able to settle in immediately in Serie A.

Among the reasons for his move to Milan was also his tactical versatility and Musah acknowledges he has much to learn.

“I played as a 6 and an 8, but I feel personally I need to develop in all these areas. I can do the job, but I feel that I can do much better. I feel more confident being an 8, so I can go deep and go high. I feel like being an 8, I can be a 6 and a 10 at the same time.”
