It took four minutes for Italy to make an impact at the 2022 World Cup, as referee Daniele Orsato and VAR Massimiliano Irrati disallowed a goal in Qatar’s opener with Ecuador.

After just two minutes and 38 seconds, hosts Qatar struggled to deal with a free kick and eventually Enner Valencia nodded in from close range.

However, the celebrations were cut short when Irrati called down from the VAR booth, telling referee Orsato to disallow the goal.

It wasn’t entirely clear why the goal was disallowed, as there did not appear to be an offside position, but the digital graphics later showed a knee was offside.

The World Cup is also the first tournament where the semi-automatic offside is used in a bid to speed up the process of checking goals.

  1. How sad that you are commenting on the actions of an Italian referee at the World Cup , and not Italian players. Since 2006, Italy seem to have lost all World Cup form, and transferred it to better Euros performances.

  2. Peter, it’s Susy Crapanelli. What do you expect in the writing. Read her other genius articles and you’ll see what I mean.
