Federico Bernardeschi’s experience at Toronto FC went from bad to worse with a red card when he was wearing the captain’s armband against Orlando Cito.

The Italian was in the starting XI and saw his team go 2-0 down within 20 minutes, then received a second yellow card after the break for an attempted headbutt.

It ended in a humiliating 4-0 defeat, their fourth loss in a row, having won only one of their last 13 matches.

Lorenzo Insigne was still out injured, but the Toronto FC fans have turned on the Italian pair, noting Bernardeschi in particular has ‘checked out’ and is visibly disinterested in MLS.

Manager Terry Dunfield revealed Bernardeschi apologised in the dressing room to his teammates, but “a player of his experience should know better.”
