Benfica meet Liverpool tonight and some Portuguese fans still remember Fabrizio Miccoli’s volley at Anfield in 2006.

The former Italy striker was one of Benfica’s stars 16 years ago when the Portuguese giants met Liverpool at Anfield in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16. Benfica shocked the Premier League champions with a 3-0 win on aggregate that allowed them to qualify for the quarter-finals. They won 2-0 in Liverpool also thanks to a late volley of the Italian striker.

Sky Sport Italia has spotted some Portuguese fans in Liverpool watching that goal again and hoping for a similar outcome in tonight’s match. It won’t be easy as the Reds won the first leg in Portugal 3-1 last week.

Miccoli spent two seasons at Benfica, scoring 19 goals in 56 appearances. He returned to Palermo in 2007. The ex-Italy striker retired in 2016 but his life has gone downhill since as he is currently in jail for extortion, aggravated by mafia methods.
