Arturo Vidal is one of the most valuable players at Juventus, but reveals the extreme poverty of his upbringing in Chile.

The midfielder spoke to Gazzetta TV and discussed how those early years prepared him for this career.

“Like Carlos Tevez, I had a tough start in life, but this only makes us play better,” said Vidal.

“When I was 13 years old we had nothing to eat, so my mother would work a whole day just to give us food for that evening. I knew my talent at football could get us all back on our feet.

“The day of my marriage and when my children were born are the best days of my life. When things go well, you have to give back to your family and do all you can for them going forward.

“In Chile we all learned to play football among the rocks, but that helped us to develop. I used to fall on them all the time and I’ll remember that for the rest of my life.

“My home team is Rodelindo Roman and one day I’d love to go back and play there again. In my first days at the club I mainly just ran around, as I didn’t really know how to play, but then I started to have fun.”
