“I think, for now, I made the right choice,” the Italian told Radio RAI. “I’m playing for a side made up of champions.

“I don’t know if I would have done better in Italy, but my dream is to return to playing football in my country.”

Verratti was a revelation in Serie B last season under boss Zdenek Zeman, the Czech who is now in charge at Roma.

“He gave me so much,” the 21-year-old added. “He had faith in me and the other young players. And we had a great season.”

While Verratti thrived under Zeman, international teammate Daniele De Rossi is having his problems in the capital.

“De Rossi is a player who would be good for any team and I don’t know why he is not playing. But Zeman is a great Coach, an ideal one for a big club.”
