Marco Verratti “hoped to the end” that he could take part in Euro 2016, but the Italy and PSG midfielder requires surgery.

It was confirmed on Friday that he would go under the knife in Doha on May 16 to correct a long-standing sports hernia problem.

“I had hoped to the end that I’d be able to participate in such an important competition as the Euros and to help my teammates achieve the objectives we’d set, but unfortunately I didn’t make it…” wrote Verratti on Instagram.

“I will soon have to undergo an operation… I wanted to wish all the best to my teammates as they go into this fantastic experience and I hope it’ll be a magical summer for all Italians.

“I also wanted to thank the PSG fans who have always been close. I promise that I’ll do everything to get back as soon as possible and above all stronger than ever.”

Verratti is expected to be out of action for around eight weeks following surgery, as months of conservative treatment failed.
