Italy international Marco Verratti is lauded for his PSG performances in Ligue 1 and the Champions League, but could face a five-match ban for insulting the referees.

The midfielder has been in Paris ever since leaving Serie B side Pescara in 2012 for a fee of €12m, a remarkable figure at the time for someone who had never played in the top flight.

He became a mainstay at Parc des Princes and is under contract until June 2024, earning plaudits last week for his performance in the Champions League victory over Real Madrid.

However, Verratti also has a famously shocking disciplinary record, with 115 yellow cards and five red in 368 competitive appearances for Paris Saint-Germain.

L’Equipe now report Verratti has been called to testify in front of the LFP disciplinary commission, as he faces a potential five-match ban in Ligue 1.

In the post-match comments with Canal+ after their 3-1 defeat to FC Nantes, Verratti went on a rant about the officiating in the league so far this season.

Among the phrases used, showing how fluent he has become in French, was: “We are getting s*** on by the referees.”

  1. ok time out! What’s with the rash of referee reprisals in in all these articles? Verratti, Mourinho, Gasparini, Ronaldo. I’m afraid to step out of my loft to clear snow off the car lest a state trooper give me a citation. But all will be well today when Iberia beats Italy 20-0 using mysterious powers only they can wield.
