Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti has confirmed he was approached by Fiorentina this summer.

“There was a contact with them,” the Italian told Sky Sport Italia. “However, I decided to renew my contract with PSG instead.

“I want to thank the Viola, though. They are a great side in my opinion, they have reinforced and I wish them well for the season ahead.”

The playmaker, 20, is now tied to the French capital club until June 2018 just a year after leaving Pescara in a €12m deal.

“This will be a great Serie A season,” Verratti added as he prepared to join up with his international teammates for the World Cup qualifiers.

Napoli have really strengthened, as have Juventus. It will be a two-horse race for the Scudetto,” he continued.

“I still have a soft spot for Juventus, but I am a great Pescara fan and I still go and watch them when possible.”
