Thomas Vermaelen admits Roma must bounce back against Sampdoria after the “disappointing result against Cagliari”.

The Giallorossi took a 2-0 lead in Sardinia, but a second half collapse saw them leave Sant’Elia with just a point.

“Sampdoria? It’s a very important game,” Vermaelen acknowledged, speaking to Roma’s official website.

“Every game for us is very important so, especially after the disappointing result against Cagliari. We want to put something straight on Sunday and for us we are very motivated to have a good game and hopefully get the three points.

“What have we learned? The problem is we have all come back from national team so we haven’t talked to the coaches yet, but we will try to do that and analyse not only the second half but the whole game and see what we can improve, because I think it is very important to learn from the mistakes.

“That is the only way we can grow into the season. As I said, Sunday is a big game already so we want to be well-prepared for that. Look back quickly on the Cagliari game and improve that for Sunday.”

Luciano Spalletti has experimented with three at the back this season, and Vermaelen was asked how he is adapting to that system.

“I think it is a good thing. When you are flexible as a team and can change tactic it is a good thing because you can surprise opponents even within the game.

“Personally, I haven’t played a lot with three defenders but we’ve done it a few times in training and also in the friendly [against Latina] and the last 20 minutes or so against Cagliari so it is something I am getting used to.

“I quite like the system as well so for me it does not really matter which one we play, and as I say I think it is only positive that we can do it.”

The centre-back is on loan from Barcelona, having previously represented Arsenal, and was asked for his first impressions of Serie A.

“It’s difficult to say after such a short period,” Vermaelen noted.

“How I knew Serie A before is that the teams are very well-organised, tactically very good, they are all very prepared – all the managers and the players are very prepared for the games so it is always difficult to beat a team.

“You have that in England and Spain as well – nowadays in professional football the teams all know each other very well so you can see what’s going on.

“In Serie A it’s the same. So, yeah, I like the league so far and I look forward to getting to know it more. And for me it’s another country so I’m very excited about it.”
