The defender had already been beset by injuries since joining the club from Arsenal and limped off during last night’s game against Atletico Madrid.
He has now been diagnosed with a muscular lesion to his left calf muscle and will be out of action for at least three weeks.
This means Jeremy Mathieu is likely to join Javier Mascherano in central defence for the Roma game.
