Giampiero Ventura says he is “excited” about Italy’s upcoming clash with Spain as “if we win, we’ll have done something great”.

Italy restart their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign this Saturday, when they travel to Spain for their group decider, and Ventura insists the Azzurri will face La Roja head-on.

“Market still open? It’s a point of controversy, it must end at least 24 hours before the start of the season,” the CT said at a Press conference.

“The national team pays the price. Insigne? He’s doing fine, now he’s important for Napoli and the national team.

“I hope there are others as important as him. Spain? We’ll face them openly and try to win. If the last time Italy won in Spain was 70 years ago, it’s clear that there’s been a problem, but it has the same value as the game against Israel.

“I won’t lose any sleep for Spain, but I’m excited. I like to be a Coach in these types of games, it gives me excitement and motivation.

“Spinazzola? Many are wondering why he was called up if he trained little, but if we talk about him during the year he’s an asset.

“Here we are, at the beginning of the season, and we have to start again with the players who played our last game in Udine.

“In October or November, it’d have been different because I would’ve made other checks. Now it wouldn’t be possible. He’s important for the continuity of this group.

“Formation? There’s conviction from the group on this. We work on various issues by going from one situation to another during the game, a back four or three.

“That also needs participation and involvement. We’ll start by building a club team within the national team.

“Belotti and Immobile? They struggle together in a trident because they’re two centre-forwards

“Verratti? Maybe he’s played more with me than the others. He’s ready and willing. I think he’s absolutely ready.

“At PSG, Verratti plays as a deep-lying playmaker, then as a central midfielder and a No 10. He can play anywhere in the middle. He’s important to us.

“Belotti 100m? I think he’s a great player but he has some room for improvement. Yesterday he scored a great goal.

“He also needs to put in more great performances. He’s on track but he must be given time. He knows this and must work in this regard.

“VAR? It needs time. There are still some inconsistencies, but patience is needed to develop it.

“I’m in favour of its concept, but it’s true that what we’ve seen so far can be improved.

“With a view to our next two games, adrenaline can make up for any problems we may have.

“I’d like to speed up the growth of those who have to take the place of those older than them.

“We don’t have a lot of players in some positions. I can’t wait to start the training camps again.

“It’s obvious that if we win, we’ll have done something great, but the conditions of the players and and the transfer market affect us to a degree.

“However, I’m interested in how the players reach [these games] and are aware and determined.”
