Inter caretaker manager Stefano Vecchi is “disappointed” for Frank de Boer’s dismissal, but ready to lead them against Southampton.

The Dutchman was fired after seven defeats in his 14 games at the helm and there are still several candidates to replace him, but in the meantime there’s a crucial Europa League match to be played.

“We had a quick training session and I know the first team well, as the Primavera youth side usually trains close by,” said Vecchi in his Press conference.

“Clearly preparing a game like this has put a bit of pressure on and I haven’t even had time to call home yet.

“I am disappointed for De Boer, as he put so much passion and hard work into it. We had a good rapport, but these things happen in this profession.

“I don’t know what will happen going forward. The club asked me to do this, so I am the Inter Coach. I am not particularly interested in whether I am a caretaker or not. The important thing is tomorrow night and there’s no point looking further forward.

“It is often said that a Coach needs time, but we need to look at the present. Tomorrow’s match could be decisive in many areas. We’ll be relying on good players who must find the strength to get out of a complicated situation. I am putting my faith in them.

“I was asked to bring a little certainty and calm, to play it simple. With so little time to prepare, we hope two or three concepts could be clarified.

“I didn’t sleep much last night, also as I was watching Southampton videos and analysing our team too. But when I sleep, I sleep soundly.

“In my mentality, you have to play the game. If Southampton force us to defend ourselves, we’ll do it with gritted teeth. We will try to play our game.”
