Van der Sar spoke to Sky Sport Italia on the touchline ahead of kick-off and was asked about the future.

“I think these will be De Ligt’s final games with Ajax, but I hope he goes out on a high. He’s been here since he was a child and will end up at a big club.”

When asked what nation he thought De Ligt could be playing in next season, former Juventus goalkeeper van der Sar seemed to exclude Italy.

“I think he’ll go to England or Spain.”

Manchester United, Manchester City and Barcelona have been most heavily linked with De Ligt.

His teammate, midfielder Frenkie de Jong, has already signed for Barcelona.

“We intend to keep hold of (Coach Erik) ten Hag, that is our intention. We know there will be a lot of changes within the squad, but we’d at least like to confirm the coaching staff.”
