Milan were said to be stepping up their interest in Florentino, possibly offering Lucas Paqueta in exchange.

However, ESPN claims United could already have the edge as they met his agent Bruno Carvalho Santos in January.

“Florentino is one of the highest rated young defensive midfielders in Europe, so there is a lot of interest in him at the moment,” Carvalho Santos told the American broadcaster.

“There has been a lot of talk about Milan, but I can tell you that there is a lot of competition for his services, with clubs in England, Germany and Spain also following him closely.”

The Portugal Under-21 international, who turns 21 in August, has played just 15 times for Benfica this season due to injuries and the arrival of Julian Weigl.

ESPN adds his club could accept a loan with option to buy, which would suit the Rossoneri perfectly.
