The midfielder’s form has seen him linked with a host of leading clubs around Europe, with Old Trafford boss Jose Mourinho a known admirer of his all-action performances.

And this morning’s edition of The Sun claims the Serb is all set to head to Manchester after a breakthrough in talks with the Red Devils.

Although it is said United were initially ‘reluctant’ to pay Lazio’s asking price for Milinkovic-Savic, they have now accepted they must do so in order to beat off competition from their rivals for the player’s signature.

Milinkovic-Savic, who has been at Lazio for three seasons since joining from Genk, is said to be keen to link up with international teammate Nemaja Matic in the United midfield.

It is also thought that Mateja Kezman, who played under Mourinho while the duo were at Chelsea and is now Milinkovic-Savic’s agent, was instrumental in brokering the deal.

Should the transfer go through, it would be the second-highest fee ever paid for a player by a Premier League club – after the £89m United spent on Paul Pogba in 2016.
