UEFA have released a statement noting it ‘vehemently condemns violent behaviour’ towards referees after Roma fans harassed Anthony Taylor and Jose Mourinho was charged with abusive language.

The incidents occurred after the Europa League Final in Budapest on Wednesday evening, which ended 1-1 and Sevilla eventually won on a penalty shoot-out.

Mourinho has been charged with using insulting/abusive language towards referee Taylor after he was caught on camera calling him a “f***ing disgrace” in the stadium car park.

The next day, a group of Roma fans recognised Taylor in the airport and hurled abuse at the referee, his wife and their young daughter, one even throwing a chair.

“UEFA vehemently condemns violent behaviour directed towards its referee Anthony Taylor and his family. Such actions are unacceptable and undermine the spirit of fair play and respect that UEFA upholds.

“Referees play a crucial role in ensuring the integrity and fairness of the game, and their safety and well-being are of utmost importance.

“UEFA maintains a close collaboration with local police and airport security, however we are constantly striving to enhance security measures for officials in co-ordination with local authorities.

“We will carefully assess the incident and incorporate valuable insight into our future event planning processes.”

It remains to be seen whether Roma will be charged separately for the incident in the airport, as the charges so far only involve behaviour inside the Puskas Arena on the day of the Final.

There were two arrests in Budapest, one has been released and the other remains in custody, according to Sky Sport Italia.
