Udinese and Infront have announced a new technological approach to ensuring stadiums can safely re-open with social distancing, testing it this weekend.

The system, called Project Re-Start, will be tested at the Dacia Arena during Sunday’s Serie A match against Fiorentina.

Circa 350 people who regularly work in the matchday area of the stadium will be given a device that buzzes when social distancing is not sufficiently observed.

It will also allow for contact tracing within the stadium, should someone later test positive for COVID-19.

In England, a roadmap for reopening after the lockdown has stated up to 10,000 fans can attend the final weekend of the Premier League season on May 17.

In Serie A, the plans for reopening stadiums are still somewhat up in the air.

The issue has become more pressing because several times we have seen thousands of fans gather outside stadiums to cheer on their teams, lately including Milan, Inter, Lazio and Atalanta, without social distancing.

The ‘Human Mobility’ system was also used at the Skiing World Championship in Cortina earlier this month.
