Italy won the opening game of the European Under-19 Championship, sweeping hosts Malta aside 4-0 despite also missing a penalty.

It was a match dominated by the referee, who awarded four different spot-kicks during the 90 minutes.

Midfield talent Cher N’Dour converted the first, then Pio Francesco Esposito fired in the second penalty.

The third was missed by Sassuolo forward Luca D’Andrea, but he did get on the scoresheet eventually from open play.

Another penalty was awarded in the second half and Samuele Vignato stepped up on that occasion.

Italy are top of their group along with Portugal, who earned a 2-0 victory over Poland.
