Dries Mertens could still renew with Napoli if he is unable to find a suitor outside of Italy, according to reports.

Napoli announced the departure of their all-time leading goal scorer on Sunday after he failed to agree terms on an extension.

Mertens is a free agent and had been expected to soon sign for another club with Lazio strongly linked as they are coach by his former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri.

However, Tuttosport report he could yet perform a dramatic U-turn and renew with Napoli providing no non-Italian side offer him the terms which had previously been turned down by Partenopei chief Aurelio De Laurentiis.

The report suggests Mertens wanted €4 million per year and, assuming no other club offers those terms, he could re-sign for the Neapolitans on €2.4m.

Mertens was the third senior player to leave Napoli this summer, following Lorenzo Insigne and Kalidou Koulibaly out of the club.
