The 35-year-old, Roma’s all-time leading appearance holder and goal-scorer, is close to finishing his 19th season with the Giallorossi.

Even as he claims he had countless offers during his career to leave his hometown club, Totti has reflected that he could never have left the Eternal City.

“Although I had several opportunities to leave, I always said that I wanted to wear just one shirt during my career,” he declared on FIFA’s official website.

“I cannot imagine a different team, also I do not know how I’d be able to tell my children.

“My love for Roma has always taken precedence over all the offers received over the years and I’m glad I made this decision. For me, it is more significant than winning a Ballon d’Or.”

Totti then looked ahead and indicated that his current ambition is to extend his playing career for as long as possible.

“My future? I still have two years left on my contract and if I can remain in the same physical state then I’d like to play until I’m 40. For now, however, it is only speculation. As long as I am fit and useful for the team then I will wear these colours with great pride.

“If I lacked the physical fitness then I would be the first to call me out. I believe in my potential, the important thing is to do what is necessary to stay healthy, live a regular life and behave professionally.”

Totti also reflected on Luis Enrique’s work at the club that did include a difficult start between the pair.

“It’s normal not to be happy when on the bench, but I’ve always made myself available to help the team. Then, when I played I didn’t do too badly, and the Coach began to give me greater consideration.

“I have always said that when there are changes that they take time to be completed. The Coach’s goal is to bring a new mindset to Italy. I like the way he plays and I’m convinced that soon it will become a successful method.”
