Francesco Totti said Roma will “do everything to finish second” in a group with Real Madrid, CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen.

The Giallorossi are in Champions League Group G with reigning champions Real Madrid, CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen.

“On paper, it all seems very simple,” Totti told Sky Sport Italia.

“Last season, everyone thought we’d finish third in our group, but instead we beat everyone and came out on top. This is a tough group.

“We know that Real Madrid will have a tournament all on their own, so we’ll do everything we can to finish second.”

The Merengues have won the Champions League for an unprecedented three years in a row, but lost Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus.

“We’ll see what kind of a Real they are without Ronaldo, but we are still talking about aliens here. They bought so many players and are still nonetheless Real Madrid. It’s a competitive side to be respected every time.”

Roma reached the semi-finals last season, beating Barcelona after an extraordinary comeback and very nearly achieving the same feat with Liverpool.

“If our objective is to do better than last year, that means going all the way to the Final in Madrid. We’ll certainly try to go as far as possible,” continued Totti.

“The expectations are very high, our squad is strong, the group is united and the Coach is aiming high. We’ll try to have our say in Europe and in Serie A.

“This is a competitive team, the club made its choices and I think they are to be respected.”
