Fernando Torres is reportedly set for a return to Atletico Madrid in January, as Milan look to offload the misfiring forward.

The Spanish striker joined the Rossoneri in the summer on a two-year loan deal from Chelsea, but has failed to make an impact, scoring just one goal, a header against Empoli in September.

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, the explosion in form of Jeremy Menez has led Milan to consider moving out either Torres or fellow misfit Giampaolo Pazzini, and the newspaper believes that Torres is favourite to be shown the exit door.

The former Liverpool man hasn’t featured for the Rossoneri since the Milan derby on November 23, which the Gazzetta believes indicates that Coach Filippo Inzaghi has lost faith in the forward.

The Milan-based sports daily believes that Atletico Madrid would be the most likely option for the World Cup winner in January, with Torres still highly regarded at Atleti having made his name there.

The newspaper states that alternatives are in short supply given Torres’ high wages, but the Spanish side may be willing to enter into an agreement with his parent club, Chelsea.
