Torreira had been linked with the likes of Roma and Sevilla but ended up extending his Samp contract at the start of the week, and while the young midfielder would not deny his ambitions of moving up a level, he was nonetheless happy to remain a Blucerchiati player.

“I’m happy to have stayed in Genoa, even if big clubs thought about me,” he told Il Secolo XI.

“I left for the holidays, full of things in the head: there was talk of other clubs, the market and so many possibilities of me going elsewhere.

“It wasn’t easy. On one hand, the ambition of being at a big club is stimulating because if you don’t always think about improving, it means you have no ambition.

“For me, going to a big club would be great, I won’t deny it. On the other hand, however, I’m glad to have committed to Samp.”
