Brace hero Luca Toni felt Verona “were hungrier” for success than Napoli in their 2-0 victory.

“We gave it all. We conceded 14 goals in our last three games against Napoli and those were frankly too many,” the 37-year-old striker told Sky Sport Italia.

“Perhaps we were hungrier, but we started strong and created many more scoring opportunities than Napoli.”

Rafa Benitez rotated his squad after the Europa League game with Dinamo Moscow, resting the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Jose Callejon.

“I was happy Higuain didn’t start! He is a world class striker. I am happy that we got the points and the goals, so now we’re going to celebrate.”

Verona seemed a far cry from the side that struggled at the start of 2015, having last week snatched a 2-2 draw at Milan in stoppages.

“These positive results brought back our enthusiasm. We emerged from a dark moment and don’t want to go back there.

“Now we have another exciting game coming up against Lazio. We’re over 30 points now and will try to hit 40 as soon as possible.”
