Sandro Tonali describes the feeling of scoring a last-gasp Milan winner against Lazio in front of a crowd that ‘felt like San Siro. We came here tonight and nobody other than us and our fans believed in us.’

The Rossoneri had the worst possible start at the Stadio Olimpico, with Ciro Immobile putting Lazio in front within four minutes, but Olivier Giroud and Tonali both managed to bundle over the line from close range to turn it around.

It was quite a moment for lifelong Milan supporter Tonali, who whipped off his shirt to celebrate with the travelling fans.

“It was a wonderful feeling, one that brought us the result we worked so hard for after a bad start,” Tonali told DAZN.

“Feeling most of the stadium was Rossonero was just crazy, we thank them for coming, it was like playing at San Siro and we showed that in the second half.

“I cannot say if it’s one of the best moments of my life, but it is certainly one I will never forget. Scoring any goal for Milan is an unforgettable feeling, let alone one like this.

“We started badly in the derby too and had the strength to react, but without managing to score. After Lazio had that goal and one other chance, it turned into a siege and we didn’t allow them anything.

“What we’ve lacked in the last few games was finishing those chances, but we managed it tonight.”

The assist was from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who knocked it down for Tonali’s tap-in.

“It is rare to have a player like him in your team, so we need to make the most of him. It was his knockdown that changed the game this evening. From Ibra to the younger players like me, we all need to just keep going.”

That means Milan are top of the Serie A table, but Inter have a game in hand to play away to Bologna on Wednesday.

Having said that, the Diavolo have already achieved their stated target by qualifying mathematically for the 2022-23 Champions League campaign.

Tonali was asked if Milan can still win the Scudetto and he reiterated something coach Stefano Pioli had also said about people not giving this team credit.

“We have to take it one game at a time. We came here tonight and nobody other than us and our fans believed in us. We are in front without hearing anyone say Milan are the leaders, Milan are a strong side. We’re used to it now.”

  1. someone needs to tell Leao that football is a team game. That you can pick out teammates instead of shooting all the time, despite being largely woeful in front of goal. no wonder the second came when he went off.

  2. Rosario CALMAAAAAAAAAAAAA as PhD Max says with jacket thrown, tossed and dumped on the touchline. You got the win after playing poorly for the first 45 minutes and showed some grinta. Leao will be a top player with more composure and better decision making. He is still young and raw but no doubt is the most dangerous and unpredictable player in Milan‘s team.

  3. @Rosario

Leao is the best player of this team and top 3 in Serie A at least. He is far from perfect, but it is almost impossible to stop him 1vs 1

  4. What a performance! And shame on those “fans” who are constantly looking over their shoulders for the latest upgrades. These players are Milan and Milan are these players. The two are inseparable. You support Milan you support the players. End of.

  5. We need that more than ever if Investcorp do buy us and we become yet another play thing for oligarchs. The only identity we will have left will be the players. Whatever happens that teams needs to be built around this squad or else it’ll just be a collection of names that we replace every few months.
