Sandro Tonali agreed a 10-month plea bargain ban for gambling while playing for Milan, but is now facing a fresh investigation to see if he placed bets during his Newcastle United tenure.

The midfielder only made the move to Newcastle over the summer, but will not be allowed to play again until the start of the 2024-25 campaign after working out a plea bargain with the Italian authorities.

That has been extended by UEFA and FIFA to cover all competition, including international duty.

The punishment and evidence was related to bets he placed during his time at Brescia and Milan, but the English FA has now opened a separate investigation to see whether Tonali continued to gamble in England.

It is against the rules for any professional football player to place bets, even if they are on different sports or not involving his own team.

Tonali confessed that he was suffering from a gambling addiction and began seeing a therapist for treatment only after he was placed under formal investigation last month.

During a press conference earlier today, Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth did not deny that there could be further sanctions on the way for Tonali.

“All I can say to you is that we have fully cooperated with all of the associations and organisations concerned and the FA are, of course, fully aware of what’s going on,” he said.

“They are the ones who had to sanction the ban so we’re fully cooperating with everybody.

“All I can deal with is the present and the facts. I can’t look into the future and, as I’ve said, we’ve cooperated fully with all of the organisations.”

The Italian authorities have tended to be far harsher on players who gamble, as Ivan Toney of Brentford was given an eight-month ban for placing hundreds of bets, including on his own team to lose.
