Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali has had his 10-month ban officially confirmed, ruling him out of Euro 2024 should Italy qualify.

The 23-year-old Italian midfielder had confessed to placing bets on football matches, including games involving Brescia and Milan, and his legal team reached a plea deal with the FIGC.

Tonali will be banned from football for 10 months and will also carry out eight months of rehab activities, aimed at resolving his gambling addiction. He’s also required to make 16 public appearances, likely for education purposes with youngsters.

With Euro 2024 set to kick off in Germany in June, Tonali’s ban would still be active for the entire tournament, so he would not be a part of the Italy squad should they secure qualification.

The 23-year-old Italian midfielder is expected to return to the pitch in August next year, leaving Newcastle without their €70m man for the rest of the 2022-23 season.
