Roma thrashed Basaksehir 4-0 on the opening day of the group stage but were facing elimination, having failed to win any of their following three games.

The Turkish side, meanwhile, knew a victory would book their place in the last 32 for the first time ever, and they looked dangerous on the counterattack.

Edin Visca curled an effort just wide of Pau Lopez's far post early on, while they later had a goal disallowed for offside.

Nonetheless, the Giallorossi took the lead when Mehmet Topal blocked Pellegrini's strike down low with his arm.

Up stepped Jordan Veretout, who sent Mert Gunok the wrong way, before Justin Kluivert toepoked for 2-0, Pellegrini having released him with a lobbed through ball.

The Italy international soon made it a hat-trick of assists, clipping another delightful pass for Edin Dzeko, who took it on his chest before coolly tucking away the finish.

If it wasn't enough of a non-contest by the time the restart had dawned, Basaksehir were forced to use all of their three subs by the 53rd minute as ex-Atalanta defender Martin Skrtel suffered an injury.

However, an ugly incident broke out soon after, when Pellegrini was hit by an object from the stands – later revealed to be a coin.

That caused blood to pour out of a wound on the back of his head and the announcer at the Fatih Terim Stadium to issue a formal warning to home supporters.

The midfielder managed to carry on with a bandage affixed, as does Roma's run in the Europa League this season.

They will qualify for the last 32 with a win against Borussia Monchengladbach in two weeks or even a draw if Basaksehir fail to beat Wolfsberger.
