Inter President Erick Thohir insists he “never thought” of hiring a Coach other than Roberto Mancini to replace Walter Mazzarri.

“After long telephone conversations with the directors and Moratti, I decided along with everyone to make a change,” Thohir told Sky Sport Italia.

“I focused on who I consider to be the best man, the best Coach in Italy, even though I appreciated and thank Mazzarri.”

There are rumours this has been bubbling under the surface for a while, but the Indonesian businessman assured it was all very rapid.

“It really all happened over one day and night. I never thought of any name other than Mancini. Mancini already knows Inter well and we chose him for the good of Inter. We needed fresh air, a different atmosphere and to take the pressure off.

“Mancini accepted the project with enthusiasm and is aware of the financial situation at the club, but within possible limits we will try to reinforce the squad according to his suggestions in January.

“I ask the fans to support the Coach, the players and to respect their work, but above all to play together, as with them we are like one great team.

“San Siro has to be our home. We cannot keep playing at San Siro as if it was an away game.”

This confirms that the pressure from social media and jeers in the stands prompted Thohir to sack Mazzarri now rather than wait until after the Milan Derby.
