Inter President Erick Thohir showed “gratitude, admiration and respect” for Massimo Moratti’s 19 years in charge.

Honorary President Moratti sold the club to Thohir a year ago and abruptly resigned from the Board of Directors this week along with his assistants Angelomario Moratti, Rinaldo Ghelfi and Alberto Manzonetto.

A statement released by Inter this evening confirmed Thohir has flown back to Jakarta, but “wished to express his admiration and respect for Massimo Moratti” after 19 years at San Siro.

“Massimo achieved remarkable success during his time in charge of the club, the culmination of which was Inter’s incredible Treble triumph in 2010,” said Thohir.

“He didn’t only succeed in building another Grande Inter side, following in the footsteps of his father Angelo: away from the pitch he created the marvellous worldwide social project that is Inter Campus. He has my gratitude.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Angelomario Moratti, Rinaldo Ghelfi and Alberto Manzonetto for their work as members of the board.

“In the coming weeks I shall call a shareholders’ meeting and ensure that another board is appointed. I will return to Milan in November and in the meantime, like all our fans around the world, I’ll be following our games and cheering on the team from afar, starting with tomorrow’s match against Cesena.”
