Spezia coach Thiago Motta admits his team have ‘no excuses’ for their 4-0 defeat to Hellas Verona. ‘We conceded avoidable goals.’

His team was decimated by injuries, with only five outfield players available on the bench at the Stadio Bentegodi, then lost Simone Romagnoli to a late red card.

It was a harsh decision, as the defender jutted out an elbow slightly into Ilic’s ribs, but did not appear to put any power into it.

“The game was already in a complicated situation for us. His behaviour has always been exemplary, he doesn’t have the malice in him to try and hurt an opponent. The footage is there, you can evaluate whether the referee saw it right or not,” Thiago Motta told DAZN.

“There are no excuses. We conceded avoidable early goals and were unable to finish our own chances. The result is a bit too heavy, but I remain convinced the gap between the two teams is not as big as we saw today.”

What can Thiago Motta do to turn things around for this Spezia side, as they go into the break for international duty?

“Games are decided in the two penalty areas. I saw Verona put the ball in the net and we did not. We’re working on it, I am convinced that whoever scores the opening goal does inevitably change the game.

“We will continue to work in training, we did well in some games, less so in others. We can certainly improve in our mentality, because we keep conceding avoidable goals and missing chances that we create.”
