José Mourinho said he didn’t want to ‘lower’ himself to Raffaele Palladino’s level on the eve of a Serie A clash between Roma and Monza after the Briazoli boss had described Mou’s behaviour as ‘outrageous’ after their last meeting.

Roma host Monza at the Stadio Olimpico at 11:30 BST today. Their last meeting at the U-Power Stadium ended in a 1-1 draw this past May, but controversies surrounded it.

Mourinho was furious with referee Daniele Chiffi during and after the game and even said he had hidden a microphone “to record everything” the official and his assistants said during the match. The Portuguese coach added that Chiffi was the “worst referee” he had ever met.

Palladino had a different view and blamed Mourinho and his players instead.

“I was angry with the fourth official because I’ve never seen so many protests from the opposing bench, it was incredible,” he said at a post-match press conference.

“I burned more energy by watching them than focusing on my team. What they did today was outrageous, so I was angrier with the fourth official. The referee was perfect. Actually, I congratulate him because he officiated well.”

Mourinho commented on his opponents’ claims on the eve of Roma-Monza on Saturday and looked unimpressed, but still praised Monza for their results.

“I do not want to lower myself to his level,” replied Mourinho.

“I do not know Palladino, usually when I don’t know the coach, I know the teams who are a consequence of the potential of the coach. If he did this, he is a good coach.”
