But the goalscorer has no regrets, and is looking forward to playing in the Azzurri shirt again – possibly under Antonio Conte.
“Right now I am only thinking about the future,” he told reporters at the Viola’s training base.
“Conte could bring many new things to the team, but let’s see what happens.
“I didn’t offend anyone with that tweet. Playing for the national team is still a goal of mine.
“Decisions have to be made by the Coach, the President – that’s the first step. But for my part, I want to come back and play.
“I want to do well for Fiorentina, and then do well for the national team.”
The American-born forward then concentrated on his club side, and the upcoming campaign.
“We want to keep our best players and have a great season,” he said. “There is a great desire to win things – we came so close in the cup last season.
“I really want to keep playing with Mario [Gomez] and Juan [Cuadrado]. Unfortunately, Mario was out for a lot of last season.”
Rossi went on to remark on his own fitness issues.
“I feel fine, I’m training with the team in the morning and the afternoon. I feel tired, but that’s normal in pre-season!
“It’s normal that I’d do a little more work than the rest of the lads because of my knee, but I feel good.
“It’s going to be a good season.”
