FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio will “always be grateful” to Antonio Conte and “money has nothing to do” with his decision to stand down as Italy CT.

It was confirmed earlier today that the former Juventus Coach will step down from his role with the Azzurri after this summer’s European Championships.

Conte appears almost certain to join English Premier League side Chelsea, who have Guus Hiddink as caretaker after Jose Mourinho was sacked.

“Antonio told me he’ll end his experience after the European Championships,” Tavecchio told Sky.

“He feels the lure of the pitch and that’s understandable. I’ll always be grateful for his commitment and sacrifice, but he misses the smell of the grass, and that’s the most important thing he said to me.

“Money has nothing to do with it, he talked about consistency. In the morning you wake up [as Italy CT] and there’s no work to do on the pitch.”
