FIFA President Gianni Infantino insists Carlo Tavecchio is doing a “great job” as FIGC chief, despite calls for him to step down.
Tavecchio’s position is widely considered untenable after Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup, as is that of CT Giampiero Ventura, but Infantino believes it is “unfair and ridiculous to judge a presidency on just one bad result.”
“I find it unfair and ridiculous to judge a presidency on just one bad result, regardless of how serious it is,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I have a great relationship with Tavecchio and I respect his work very much. He’s an old-fashed person but open to new things and able to work with everyone for the sake of Italian football.
“Proof of this is the FIGC’s extraordinary contribution to the VAR project, which is crucial for all of football and the future.
“Its budgets are fine, the statutes of its League are in line and several socio-football projects show the great job its doing.
“Of course I understand the pain of every Italian, yet if Darmian’s shot hit the inside of the post and went in, we’d be using superlatives for everything and everyone and that wouldn’t be right.
“It’s clear that in Italian football, a new vision of technical development is needed to bring them back to the heights that they’ve always competed at.
“Italy have always been able to react, and they will once more.”
